The Kroger Company, or Kroger for short, is an American retail company founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In terms of revenue, it is the largest supermarket in the United States ($121.16 billion in fiscal year 2019) and is also the second largest integrated retailer (after Walmart). Kroger is also the world’s fifth largest retailer and the fourth largest US private employer in the United States. In terms of total revenue, Kroger ranks 23rd in the Fortune 500 ranking of the largest American companies.

As of November 30, 2020, Kroger operates 2,750 supermarkets and multi-sector stores. These facilities are managed directly or through its subsidiaries. The company is headquartered in downtown Cincinnati. Its markets are located in 35 states and the District of Columbia. Store formats include hypermarkets, supermarkets, supermarkets, department stores and 170 jewelry stores (782 convenience stores were sold to EG Group in 2018). Kroger brand grocery stores are located in the Midwest and South of the United States. Kroger operates 35 food processing or manufacturing facilities, 1,585 supermarket fuel centers, 2,256 pharmacies, and 225 The Little Clinic in-store medical clinics.

Kroger employees are mostly represented by collective bargaining agreements, and many are represented by the U.S. Food and Commercial Workers’ Union (UFCW).

In 1883, 23-year-old Bernard Kroger was the fifth of ten children of German immigrants. He used his life savings of $372 (approximately $10,000 in 2020) on Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati. A grocery store was opened on the 66th. As the businessman’s son, he runs his own business with a simple motto: “Be special. Never sell anything you don’t want.” He tried to market the products produced by his company. Customers do not need to visit separate shops and farms.

In 1884, Kroger opened his second store. By 1902, the Kroger Grocery and Baking Company was established. At this time, the company has grown to 40 stores, selling goods worth $1.75 million per year. In addition, Kroger became the first grocery chain to have its own bakery.

In 1916, Kroger Company began self-service shopping. Before that, all items were stored behind the counter, customers would ask for it, and then the clerk would deliver it to the customer.

In 1929, there were rumors that Safeway would merge with Kroger.

In the 1930s, Kroger became the first grocery chain to monitor product quality and test the food provided to customers, and also the first chain to be surrounded by parking lots on all four sides of the store.
