NFL: Philip Rivers Is Thinking Of Coming Out Of Retirement

Apparently Philip Rivers contacted the San Francisco 49ers down the stretch of the 2022 season. The 49ers were in a desperate situation in terms of quarterback.

The starter, Trey Lance went down very early in the year. Jimmy Garoppolo came in and played well. However, he sustained an injury midway through the season and left the 49ers in need of yet another replacement at QB.

It was during this point that Philip Rivers reached out to the 49ers. He must have thought that the team could use some veteran security at its most important position. However, Brock Purdy came in and surprised the entire football world. The rookie’s performance has led many to wonder if he has earned the right to start for the 49ers when he comes back from injury in the 2023 season.

No one has been able to do anything with the Colts situation

Philip Rivers was a long time San Diego / Los Angeles Charger. However, he finished his career with the Indianapolis Colts. It was a one year rental.

The Colts were deemed as a quarterback away from taking the next step. However, the marriage did not produce the desired results.

Indianapolis has tried the same experiment with Matt Ryan and Carson Wentz. Neither of those arrangements worked out. Because of this, many do not hold Rivers highly responsible for the underachieving efforts of the Colts the past several years.

If he still has the arm talent…

Philip Rivers always kept himself in supreme shape. However, athleticism was not a premier feature of his game. He was a pocket passer who picked apart defenses and threw his receivers open. It is not far-fetched to think that at his current age Rivers could step into a stacked lineup like the one in San Francisco and provide a unique spark.

He’s looking at the other quarterbacks in the league

Philip Rivers dueled it out with some of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan were all in their prime when Rivers was campaigning as a San Diego Charger. It may be that he is looking at the current crop of NFL quarterbacks and thinking he can still contribute something to the game.

The current NFL quarterback market is one where Derek Carr was released by the Raiders after 9 average seasons and is now commanding over 40 million dollars a year.
